Respect The DJ's
Mocca: Where are you from? What was life like growing up there?
AMAZ: Maryland! Prince Georgeʼs County to be exact. It was great growing up there, despite some of the hardships that were encountered as a result of being in a single parent household, the area was very diverse and I had easy access to intellectuals and others that helped me to develop into who I am today.
Mocca: How did you get your DJ name and how does it describe you?
AMAZ: I used to go by DJ Tony, then I was taking a dump one afternoon and said "I am more than a DJ, Iʼm amazing," so I changed it to DJ Amaz. I chose a unique spelling in order to differentiate myself.
Mocca: How would you describe your style?
AMAZ: My style is an eclectic mélange.
Mocca: How and when did you get started?
AMAZ: I had an interest when I was a pre teen. I used to hook up 2 tape players together with a splitter and plug them into the recording input of a tape recorder so that I could compose tapes with the blend effect. When I turned 19, I invested money into equipment.
Mocca: When and where was your first show?
AMAZ: Aside from house parties, my first paid show was at a Strip Club named Hot Shots in Storm Lake, IA.
Mocca: Do you use turntables or Seratos?
AMAZ: I started practicing on vinyl, then progressed to CDJs then recently integrated Serato
Mocca: How do you feel about Seratos or DJ who use iPods and pre-made mixes opposed to the old school method?
AMAZ: First off, DJs who use iPods or who rely on a computer or another device to mix for them ARE NOT DJs. They are music providers. Secondly, im not against Serato, I believe Serato helps the manifestation of oneʼs creative ideas. I believe that every DJ should start on vinyl in order to hone the skills of blending, beat matching, scratching, cutting and cuing.
Mocca: How does it feel when youʼre spinning?
AMAZ: Euphoric
Mocca: What do you want your music to mean to your audience?
AMAZ: I want my music to generate a feeling and I would like it to take the audience on a journey, both physically, and mentally. I play songs that will make the audience sweat and make them say "OH SHIT!!" especially when I take them through their memory with the olʼ skool set. I also want the music to mean "I am there with you." When I travel to differenct cities, I specifically look for music that is only played in that city. Example, DC and GO-GO, Chicago and Juke, Baltimore and Baltimore Club Music, the deep south and Zydeco, Houston, and Screw.
Mocca: Where do you get your inspiration for your material?
AMAZ: My travels.
Mocca: What projects have you worked on in the past?
AMAZ: Talia Coles (under JoJo Brim) Huey (under Angela Richardson) RoscoPhilly Swain (under Mykal Coles and Dave Chakler of NuGroove) Soulja Boy (under Eric "Kanecc" Hibbler) Hittbreaka DJs (under Terell "Playmaker")
Mocca: What current projects are you working on?
AMAZ: South By Southwest 2012, Lollapalooza 2012, The Magic Show 2012, Zero Time Off, and Dragon Bleu Vodka (under Charles Rush)
Mocca: How was your trip to the Urban Music Convention in Texas?
AMAZ: Great, we met many Texas urban music legends.
Mocca: Who would you say are people that are instrumental in your growth?
AMAZ: Playmaker, Kanecc, Rhamon, Dancy, Nate Vic. These guys gave me many of my music industry contacts.
Mocca: Do you host mixtapes? Have you put out a mixtape?
AMAZ: Yes. I Do Yes I have a series called "The Block Party"
Mocca: Do you have a team? Who are the members of your team?
AMAZ: Myself, Nate Vic, 4 Diamonds Productions 4DP, Eazy (Chester, PA), Dame The Great (Chester, PA), Boston King of Kicks (Boston, MA), Mykal Coles (Philadelphia, PA) and Hittbreaka DJs (St. Louis, MO).
Mocca: What is the most exciting thing about what you do?
AMAZ: Traveling, meeting new people, and seeing people act a fool on the dancefloor.
Mocca: Are you signed to a label, or looking to sign with a label?
AMAZ: I would like to pursue a production partnership with a label.
Mocca: How do you feel about DJʼs signing label deals?
AMAZ: There wouldnʼt be hip hop without the DJ. Records would not get broken without the DJ
Mocca: Who are some artists youʼve worked with and want to work with?
AMAZ: I would like to work with Garth Brooks, The Chi-lites, Dead Mouse, Wu Tang Clan, R Kelly, Kid Rock, Jeezy, Lloyd Banks, New Edition, Smokey Robinson, Jowell Y Randy, Sean Combs, Sean Carter, Kanye West, Common, Mos Def, Keyshia Cole and Lil Kim. I havenʼt worked with many artists directly however I did work "behind the scenes" with project promotion. I would like to work with more label executives.
Mocca: What separates you other DJ's ?
AMAZ: I am versed in over nine music genres, I develop my own promotional tools, I do my own web development and I have coordinated a showcase at the largest music festival in the world.
Mocca: Whatʼs your favorite genre?
AMAZ: Baltimore Club
Mocca: What is the most valuable piece of advice you can give to aspiring DJʼs.
