I hurried from an event at the Ritz Carlton to make my way up Connecticut Avenue so that I could be on time for the NiQue performance. Only one problem - the performance didn't start at 8pm as billed. No biggie... How can I complain, I'm doing my job, right? NiQue started off by doing a couple covers. She was able to capture the room very easily. Her attitude was that of an artist who belonged behind a mic, whether it be in the studio or at a show. NiQue even said "I need to be heard, that why I have the mic". WORD! The ability for any artist to command the room is first and foremost, once you have the room, the rest is easy. She began to transistion into her written material, the first being a song about a guy titled "Brian". The odd part is that "Brian" is never actually mentioned in the song. Apparently, he likes her more than she likes him and this song is all about how she breaks it to him. Deep... Well that is if you are asking me (& you are). The next song was dedicated to the men. It is titled "He's Just" featuring Enoch the 7th Prophet. The song is incredible, plain & simple! NiQue's subject matters are good and shows that she has a great writing ability. There was a brief intermission and a second set that I wasn't able to stay for.
The one noticable thing is that her background singer had a much bigger voice than her. At times I found myself listening to her background singer rather than her.
At one point in the show NiQue said something that I thought was funny. She said "the more you drink, the better I sound"! It made me laugh but she sounded great, even without the drinks. All in all, it was a nice event with a sizeable crowd in attendance. I enjoyed myself and the music!
Maybe I shouldn't have complained about having to wait?
